What Does Jesus’ Resurrection Mean for Us?

Obviously, there are many and quite varied ways to answer this question. Church history offers an illustration that might be useful to consider. Around the fourth century, there was a group of minor clergy, who worked as grave-diggers. They were called “fossarians.”

Fossarians. Those who open up graves.

God too is fossarian – with a difference! He opens Jesus’ grave to let him out of his captivity to death. Jesus has done the same for us. And as his people, we are also fossarians, opening graves not that they might be filled but rather emptied!

Fossarians! Perhaps this is just the image we need to take with us in a world full of graves - personal, social, religious, political, and economic – that need to be opened for life’s sake.
